About Brian Clark

Very Short Version: indie media producer

Short Version: indie-focused producer where digital tools meet conventional media niches

Three Personal Truisms:
  • Most ambitious independents are entrepenuers and vice versa.
  • The Web is about community: distribution is a by-product.
  • Innovation is about experimentation.

Formal Stuff:

Random Tidbits for the Curious:

  • an excited January 1997 (my first year at Sundance) meeting with Marc Weiss spawned not just the Web's first blog experiment (on the handover of Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule, damaged archive available) with a major media company (PBS Online), but also a model for supporting net content innovation (WebLab)

  • credited by at least one book as being originator of the "spambot" in 1996, or at least the ethical foreshadow of what now fills your email box (but, to my credit, I turned down an invitation to sit on the board of the Direct Marketing Association that same year)

  • helped the band King Crimson release net-only digital downloads of extra tracks in 1995 with the MPEG "digital single" for the song "Cage" from the EP Vrooom: people complained that the 2MB file took too long to download (and I would have laughed then if you told me Apple would end up making a portable hard drive just for downloaded music)
